Bamboo CabinetsMany homeowners today are trying to find the right balance between aesthetics and sustainability, and have begun using natural, renewable materials in their homes. They are also becoming more concerned with indoor air quality, trying to find healthier and cleaner indoor materials. For these reasons, bamboo is becoming a favorite for use on floors, furniture, countertops and cabinets.

Strikingly beautiful and remarkably durable, bamboo cabinets will add a sleek, natural look to your kitchen or bath. But the appeal of bamboo is not just how good it looks, but how hard it works. It has greater tensile strength than steel, it’s hardness rating is equal to or greater than most conventional hardwoods, and it is dimensionally stable. These features make it a logical choice for the kitchen or bathroom where higher moisture levels are present, which can cause conventional wood products to swell and stick.

The bamboo material used in our cabinets is made from canes of the bamboo plant, which is actually a grass, not a wood. Bamboo renews itself in a remarkably short time. It not only survives cutting, it thrives on it – with new growth that is thicker and stronger than before. Bamboo is a hardy plant that does not require fertilizers or heavy irrigation. But one of the best things about bamboo is that it grows to maturity in only 5 -7 years, much faster than hardwoods.

All bamboo is not created equal

Quality varies greatly among bamboo suppliers. We purchase our panels from a company that directly controls manufacturing – and product quality – from harvest to distribution. Their panels are made from Moso bamboo (not a food source or habitat for the Giant Panda). It is among the hardest variety, with dense fibers that make for strong timber and beautiful, durable cabinets. They harvest only at full maturity (5 1/2 to 6 years) when the fibers are at peak density and the bamboo is at its strongest and most stable. And they use only formaldehyde-free adhesives.

Our bamboo cabinets are built to your custom specifications. We use formaldehyde free FSC certified UV coated hardwood plywood for the interior boxes. The face frames, doors and drawer fronts are made with 3/4″ bamboo plywood panels. We use Salice soft close hinges and self close heavy duty drawer glides.

We can build your cabinets using either horizontal or vertical grain bamboo, in natural (light) or caramel color. The natural patterns, grains and growth joints inherent in bamboo will enrich the environment of any home. Bamboo is an attractive and practical alternative to traditional hardwoods. You don’t have to sacrifice style for good health – both yours and the planet’s.
